Accounting and Taxation
in Point Cook
Point Cook has a distinct profile among the western suburbs. Newer estates around Sanctuary Lakes, Featherbrook and the Town Centre, dual income households, large mortgages and a high proportion of professionals working in IT, healthcare, engineering and finance. A lot of them work for an employer during the week and run something of their own alongside it. Consulting, contracting, an online business, a rental property bought while rates were low.
That combination creates the questions we answer most often here. How a side business interacts with PAYG withholding on the main salary, and why a bill arrives despite tax being taken out all year. Whether contracting through a company is worthwhile or whether the personal services income rules take the benefit away. What the May 2026 negative gearing changes mean for a property bought recently, which in a suburb full of newer purchases is not a hypothetical question. We work from the Morris Road office in Hoppers Crossing, and a good share of Point Cook clients never come in at all.

Common Questions From Point Cook Clients
Do you have an office in Point Cook?
No. Our nearest is at 233 Morris Road in Hoppers Crossing, about ten minutes away. Plenty of Point Cook clients never visit at all. Records go through the portal, the review runs by phone or video, and signing is electronic.
I have a full time job and a side business. How does that work?
The business income is added to your salary and taxed at your marginal rate, which is why people are often surprised by a bill even though tax was withheld all year. Once the business is established the ATO may also start charging PAYG instalments. We work out both and tell you what to put aside so next year is planned rather than survived.
I bought an investment property recently. Has negative gearing changed?
If you bought after 7.30pm on 12 May 2026, yes. From the 2027-28 income year, losses on an existing residential investment property can only be offset against residential property income rather than your salary, with the excess carried forward. Properties bought before that time are grandfathered. Eligible new builds are treated differently again, so the purchase date and the type of dwelling both matter.
I am an IT contractor. Should I set up a company?
Only if it actually helps, and for a lot of contractors it does not. If most of your income comes from your own skills and one main client, the personal services income rules can attribute the income back to you regardless of the structure. We test that first. Setting up a company that fails the test costs money and delivers nothing.
Can everything be done online?
Yes. Documents through the secure portal, a phone or video review at a time that suits, and electronic signing. A lot of our Point Cook clients work full time and would rather not spend a Saturday on this, which is entirely reasonable.
